TOPIC:
Esthetic Periodontal Surgery to Enhance Restorative Results

CONTENT on 069-00:
The lecture relates to three main subjects:
1. What is the dental-medical approach to the hypertensive patient?
2. Could we treat patients with medication induced bleeding tendency?
3. The use of adrenalin in local anesthesia constitutes at times a contradictory subject. How do we deal with this question?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • The dentist will become familiar with the new guidelines for the definition and treatment of the hypertensive patient. The recommendations for stress-reduction protocols are accentuated.
  • Anticoagulants and antithrombotic medications are gaining a permanently wider popularity. Indications relative to the continuation of these treatments for patients undergoing oral invasive procedures, and means to prevent exaggerated bleeding are included.
  • The dentist will learn the pathways of adrenalin local and systemic effects. Advantages, side effects, indications and contraindications for its use in local anesthesia are covered.

CONTENT on 072-00:
Modern dentistry has expanded the arsenal of services to restore patients oral health and cosmetic needs like never before. These changes have corresponded to an increasingly complex medical environment where patients are presenting at a more advanced age, with more medical conditions, and taking more medications. Understanding the pharmacology as it relates to their systems and how the drugs they are taking, as well as those we intend to administer affect the patient, one another, and our planned treatment is necessary for a safe and successful outcome to our planned care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • Be able to discuss basic pharmacology principles as they relate to pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
  • Understand the chemical and physical properties of local anesthetics & vasoconstrictors, as well as how their action is affected by local and systemic conditions.
  • Understand the appropriate use of antibiotics for prevention as well as treatment of both localized and spreading infection.
  • Be able to discuss the various classes of sedation medications, as well as the application of the most commonly used sedative/hypnotic agents.
  • Understand the most commonly encountered drug interactions and the accompanying physiological processes.
  • Be able to discuss the most commonly used analgesics, differentiating them into opioid and non-opioid classes, and which drugs are most appropriate for which applications.
